Dates covered: Friday, June 6 – Saturday, June 7, 2025

Areas affected: Columbia, Lexington, Richland, Newberry, Saluda, Fairfield, and surrounding Midlands communities

A severe Midlands Storm swept through the area over the weekend, with damaging wind gusts, power outages, and structural impacts reported throughout the region. Between Friday evening and Saturday morning:

  • Wind gusts exceeded 60–70 mph in multiple counties

  • Over 34,000 Lexington County and 18,000 Richland County customers experienced power outages

  • Downed trees and infrastructure damage were reported in areas including Newberry and Saluda counties

  • Localized storm cells and downbursts caused scattered damage to homes and roadways

Local Impact Summary

  • Power Infrastructure: Thousands remained without power well into Sunday. Power loss often disrupts sump pumps, security systems, and HVAC units.

  • Roofing and Exterior Damage: High winds can peel back shingles, damage flashing, or dislodge siding.

  • Tree and Yard Hazards: Broken limbs and toppled trees pose risk to homes, fences, and driveways.

  • Water Intrusion: Even short-term power outages can lead to crawlspace or basement flooding, especially during sustained rainfall.

What to Look Out For

When severe storms like these roll through the area, especially with quick entrances and exits, properties can experience a number of different types of damage. Some things to consider are:

Area

What to Inspect

Roof & Gutters

Missing shingles, displaced flashing, clogged or detached gutters

Attic

Wet insulation, staining, musty odors, soft drywall

Exterior

Loose siding, cracked windows, fallen tree limbs

Basement/Crawlspace

Standing water, pump failures, wall seepage

Trees/Yard

Leaning trees, cracked limbs, shifted root systems

Once it is safe to do so, properties owners should do a post-storm inspection. A good breakdown of the where and what to do post storm is:

  1. Walk the perimeter of your home to check for visible damage or debris.

  2. Inspect indoors, especially the attic and ceilings, for new stains or sagging areas.

  3. Photograph everything you notice—roof issues, water damage, and tree impact.

  4. Call utility providers if you're still experiencing partial outages or downed lines.

  5. Check on vulnerable neighbors, especially elderly or those without backup power.

When to Call a Professional

Damage isn’t always obvious—and in many cases, hidden moisturestructural weakening, or electrical risks may not show themselves immediately. A trained professional can:

  • Use moisture meters and thermal imaging to detect unseen water intrusion

  • Provide documentation for insurance claims

  • Assist in emergency mitigation (tarping, drying, tree removal coordination)

  • Guide you through what should—and shouldn’t—be repaired right away
